Cancun | From the Mayan Cities to the City Today
Cancun had a big importance to the Mayans, due to its privileged location at the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The Mayans established small cities along this coastline, like Tulum, Coba and Xcaret Mayan ruins, and many others, for fishing and hunting purposes, as well as for commerce and religious reasons.
When the Spaniards arrived to the Mexican Caribbean, on 1526, the Mayans were in a decadence period and soon the Mayan cities were abandoned, leaving behind what we now call the Mayan ruins, and only few small Mayan towns remained in the Yucatan Peninsula.
During XIX century, the area was controlled by pirates, some of them very famous, like Captain Lafitte, and the coast remained with very few habitants.
It was until 70's when Mexican government noticed the tourist importance of the area due to its natural beauty, weather and culture and started to develop what we know now as Cancun & Riviera Maya.
Cancun City was officially founded on August 10, 1971, but rapidly became into one of the most important Mexican beach destination with world first class hotels and restaurants, as well as exciting tours and theme parks.

In front of Cancun there is the second largest coral reef system of the world, which brings a colorful variety of fishes and other forms of life.
